Although Dodworth Colliery MW Brass Band held our annual awards evening on Sunday 12th July, we had one very special award to keep back!

We were delighted to present the John Woffinden Memorial Shield – Inspirational Award to our Resident Conductor, Charlie Brammer.

Charlie received the award in recognition of his incredible work in restarting our Junior Band in September 2025, building a fantastic partnership with St John’s Primary School, and supporting and encouraging volunteers from the senior band to get involved in helping and inspiring our young learners.

The Junior Band has gone from strength to strength, and Charlie’s enthusiasm, commitment and encouragement have played a huge part in making that possible.

Charlie wasn’t able to join us for our annual awards evening, so we wanted to make sure this very special award was presented in front of the full band – and what better occasion than a rehearsal surrounded by the people who have helped make the Junior Band such a success.

A very well-deserved award, Charlie. Thank you for your inspiration, dedication and for helping to secure the future of Dodworth Colliery MW Brass Band.

Dodworth Colliery MW Brass Band’s Visit to Wetherby Overcomes Early Drama

There was plenty of unexpected drama before a note had been played when Dodworth Colliery Brass Band made its annual visit to the Wetherby Riverside Bandstand on Saturday 18 July, 2026.

Celebrating an impressive 190 years since its formation, the South Yorkshire band returned to Wetherby for what has become a cherished tradition, having performed during every summer season at the bandstand since 2000. The concert, generously sponsored by Lawtons of Tadcaster, was another excellent example of community music-making, made possible through the continuing efforts of the volunteers of the Wetherby Bandstand Trust.

The afternoon, however, nearly got off to the worst possible start. A serious traffic accident on the A1 north of Doncaster delayed Resident Conductor Charlie Brammer, together with several players, leaving the band to adapt quickly as audience members gathered.

Fortunately, the band's Conductor Development Programme had already provided a ready-made solution. Stephen Morley, originally due to conduct only the opening three items of the second half, calmly stepped forward to take charge of proceedings. Showing remarkable composure for only his second full public concert appearance on the podium, he led the band through what had originally been planned as the second-half programme.

His confident direction of Essence of Brass, Don't Let the Sun and The Wellerman demonstrated both musical authority and an assured rapport with the players. Any nerves certainly weren't apparent, and the audience rewarded the performances with warm applause.

Perhaps the afternoon's most memorable moment came early into the concert, as the band's delayed percussionist made a spectacular entrance by vaulting over the rear of the bandstand to reach his drum kit just in time. It was a moment that perfectly summed up the determination of everyone involved to ensure the concert went ahead without compromise.

As Stephen completed the three works he had originally been scheduled to conduct, Charlie Brammer arrived, walking across the adjoining car park to take over the baton. With the band now complete, the remainder of the programme continued, although with a revised running order. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone replaced the planned Les Misérables at that point, with the original first-half programme being performed after the interval, eventually bringing the afternoon to a stirring conclusion with the music from Les Misérables.

Throughout the concert the band displayed its customary warmth of sound and musical versatility. Darren Wood's euphonium solo, Benedictus, was performed with beautiful lyricism and control, while Mervyn Lloyd's expressive interpretation of Rainy Days and Mondays provided another musical highlight.

The programme itself offered tremendous variety, ranging from the power of Pulsar and the traditional march Shield of Liberty, through lighter favourites including Sway, Poker Face, For Your Eyes Only and The Wellerman, to the evocative melodies of Lady Stewart's Air, Going Home and the ever-popular Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.

A rousing performance of Kabalagala was warmly received as an encore before the traditional conclusion with the National Anthem.

If ever there was an afternoon that demonstrated the resilience and camaraderie that define the brass band movement, this was it. Faced with significant disruption before the concert had even begun, Dodworth Colliery Brass Band responded with professionalism, flexibility and no little sense of humour.

Most audience members will remember the dramatic start, but they will leave remembering something more important: another outstanding performance from a band that continues to uphold a remarkable 190-year tradition and whose long-standing association with Wetherby Riverside Bandstand remains as strong as ever.

This was voted on by the committee. Previously, this has gone to a player section within the band. However, this year in recognition of their support during fundraising, of which we like many other bands could not do without are our VOLUNTEER COLLECTORS! Finally, a surprise recognition for KEITH KELLET. For his ‘transportation’ skills

Ten months ago, Dodworth Colliery MW Brass Band & Training Band Organisation offered something truly special to the children in our school: their time, their knowledge and their passion.

What started as a handful of volunteers coming into school to introduce children to brass instruments has grown into something that has exceeded every expectation.

In just 10 months, these young musicians have performed at six concerts, played alongside experienced brass bands and recently delivered a 10-piece set of their own. To watch them stand proudly and confidently in front of an audience is incredible, especially when many had never picked up an instrument before.

As both a teacher at the school and a parent, this journey has been particularly meaningful. The young musician in this photo is my son, and I have had the privilege of watching not only his progress, but the growth of every child involved. Their confidence has flourished, their commitment has been inspiring and they have discovered talents they never knew they had.

What makes this achievement even more remarkable is that it has been made possible entirely through the dedication of volunteers. Week after week, members of the colliery band have given up their own time to rehearse with the children and provide free one-to-one tuition, helping them develop their musical skills and supporting them every step of the way.

In a village with deep mining roots, brass bands are more than music. They are part of our identity, our history and our community spirit. Seeing that tradition passed on to the next generation is something very special. These volunteers are not only teaching children how to play an instrument; they are helping them connect with their heritage, build confidence, develop discipline and experience the joy that comes from being part of something bigger than themselves.

I am incredibly proud of every child involved and immensely grateful to the volunteers who believed in them from day one. What they have achieved together in just 10 months is extraordinary, and I know this is only the beginning.

Thank you for investing in our children, preserving an important part of our community’s story and showing what can happen when people give their time to make a difference.

Three Bands, Four Conductors – Dodworth's Spring into Summer Concert Celebrates Development at Every Level

Dodworth Colliery MW Brass Band welcomed a fantastic audience to its Spring into Summer Concert on Sunday 28th June, for an evening that celebrated not only great music but also the band's commitment to developing musicians and musical leaders of the future.

The concert featured three bands and four conductors, highlighting Dodworth's vision of creating opportunities for players and conductors at every stage of their musical journey.

The evening opened with Dodworth Colliery MW Brass Band, who presented a varied and entertaining programme. The band, conducted by Charlie Brammer, performed Pulsar, Poker Face, and Rainy Days and Mondays, featuring an expressive baritone solo from Merv Lloyd, before continuing with the energetic Kabalagala and concluding the first half with a selection from Les Misérables.

The audience was then entertained by Bu3a Band (Old Blowers), conducted by Roy Gamble. Formed in 2016 as part of Barnsley & District u3a, the group was originally established to give members the opportunity to learn to read music and try playing a brass instrument in a relaxed and enjoyable environment. Thanks to the enthusiasm of its members, the group quickly progressed to public performances and now regularly supports charities, community organisations and local events throughout the Barnsley and Dearne Valley area.

The Old Blowers are also passionate advocates for brass music in schools. Since performing at Jump Primary School during the Platinum Jubilee celebrations in 2022, they have visited around 20 primary schools, introducing children to brass instruments and encouraging the next generation of musicians. Last year, they also performed at St John's Primary Academy, Dodworth, helping to launch the school's brass group, which has since developed into today's Dodworth Junior Band.
Their programme included Oh When the Saints, Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean, Can You Feel the Love Tonight, Shaker Song, and the ever-popular Sweet Caroline, all warmly received by the audience.

Following the interval, Dodworth Junior Band, conducted by Charlie Brammer, took to the stage. Formed through the partnership between Dodworth Colliery MW Brass Band and St John's Primary Academy, the junior band has made remarkable progress since rehearsals began in September 2025. Their performances of Mini Fanfare, Beginner Serenade, and Beginner Blues, with members of the senior band joining them for the latter two pieces, demonstrated the confidence and enthusiasm of the band's newest generation of players.

The senior band returned for the second half, but this time the focus was also on developing future conductors.

One of the highlights of the evening was seeing four conductors take to the podium across the three bands. Alongside Musical Director Adam Whittle and Resident Conductor Charlie Brammer, Stephen Morley conducted the senior band as part of Dodworth Colliery MW Brass Band's recently launched Conductor Development Programme.

The initiative provides aspiring conductors with structured, practical experience, working alongside Adam and Charlie to develop the musical leadership skills needed for the future. Stephen directed The Wellerman and Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me, demonstrating the progress of the programme and the band's commitment to investing in people as well as performances.

Adam Whittle then took the baton for the stirring Paso Doble, Amparito Roca, before leading Darren Wood in a superb performance of Benedictus, an outstanding euphonium solo. The senior band's programme concluded with the magical music from Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.

The evening came to a fitting conclusion as all three bands combined on stage for a joyful performance of Happy Together, conducted by Charlie Brammer.

Seeing musicians of all ages and experience performing together perfectly captured the spirit of the evening and the ethos of Dodworth Colliery MW Brass Band.

The concert was more than just an enjoyable evening of entertainment. It was a showcase of the band's vision for the future—developing young players through its Junior Band, supporting lifelong participation through community groups such as the Old Blowers, and investing in the next generation of musical leaders through its new Conductor Development Programme.

On Sunday 28th June we will have performances from Dodworth Colliery MW Brass Band, Dodworth Junior Band and BU3a Band - also known as ‘The Old Blowers’

With that in mind, here’s some background to the BU3a Band
The Bu3a Old Blowers

The Old Blowers brass group was set up as part of the Barnsley & District u3a in November 2016 by Max Senior as the coordinator. The intention of the group members was to learn to read music and have a try at blowing a brass instrument, mainly as a bit of fun. However, due to the enthusiasm of the people who joined, it wasn’t long before they were able to play simple tunes.

The group improved and played its first concert in July 2017 at the Bu3a monthly meeting and it was a great success. The improvement continued and the group now performs at many local events to assist charities, social clubs and many other organisations. In 2022 the group was invited to perform at the Jump Primary School as part of the schools Queens Jubilee celebrations.

Following the success of this, the group has performed at approximately 20 Primary schools across the Barnsley and Dearne Valley area. Last year they performed at St John’s Primary School in Dodworth to initiate the setting up of a brass group within the school.

If you wish to listen to the Old Blowers again, they will be performing at the Thurgoland Funday on Sunday 5th July from 2-00 pm. On Saturday the 1st August they will be performing at the Maurice Dobson museum at Darfield from 12-30 pm.

Dodworth Colliery MW Brass Band launches new Leadership Structure and Trainee Conductor Development Initiative

Dodworth Colliery MW Brass Band is proud to announce a significant step forward in their musical journey, with emphasis on development in all aspects of our organisation, whilst strengthening both playing and leadership roles.

At the heart of this exciting new venture are respected Musical Directors, Adam Whittle and Charlie Brammer.

Adam Whittle will assume the role of Musical Director with a clear focus on band development and contesting ambitions. He will provide once monthly development sessions, working closely with the band to enhance individual performance, ensemble cohesion and overall musicality. Working with our Resident and Trainee conductors, he will also prepare and direct the bands competitive performances throughout the year.

Charlie Brammer will assume the role of Resident Conductor, developing the bands concert performances, ensuring continued development and overseeing our new Conductor Development Programme.

During his teacher career, Charlie was always keen to develop students understanding of composition and arranging. This new programme will develop these and other skills in a practical, hands on learning experience designed to support and nurture the future conductors of our movement.

The band is also delighted to highlight the success of its Dodworth Junior Band, developed in partnership with St John’s Primary School, Dodworth, with young musicians playing together since September 2025 and already taking to the stage at the Christmas concert and again in June 2026.

Working alongside both Adam and Charlie, aspiring conductors will follow a structured pathway, with increasing time in front of the band, with a view to achieving a full time conducting position within our organisation.
